On April 28, a delegation from the Guangdong Shipbuilding Industry Association held discussions with Qiu Xiangyao, director of Guangzhou HG Marine Co.Ltd, to gain a deep understanding of Guangzhou HG's research, operations, and production. At the production site of Guangzhou HG, technicians were testing a batch of GRM40 rim driven thrusters that are about to be delivered. Due to a full production schedule this year, the workers have been working overtime continuously to ensure on-time delivery.

In the past three years, affected by the pandemic and global economic uncertainties, various industries have been greatly impacted. Similarly, during the pandemic, Guangzhou HG also faced considerable difficulties. However, the employees of Guangzhou HG did't lose hope or confidence. By the end of 2021, the company made early strategic arrangements, with the management team conducting in-depth research and making every effort to increase investment in research, fostering innovation, cultivating talent for the development of rim driven thrusters, gradually building a new industrial chain, focusing on the small- and medium-power hanging propeller market, and expanding projects in electrical control equipment and ship supporting equipment, achieving favorable results.
In 2021, Guangzhou HG developed and manufactured two models of rim driven ship thrusters, the GRM100 with a rated power of 250KW and the GRM70 with a rated power of 100KW, which received CCS certification from the China Classification Society, becoming the first domestically produced rim driven ship thrusters to obtain CCS certification. This is a major breakthrough in the development of rim driven ship thrusters in China and an important milestone for the industry's development, marking a substantial step forward for China's rim driven thrusters.Guangzhou HG completed the "Research and Industrialization Project on Key Technologies of High-efficiency, Low-noise, Shaftless, Rimless, Full-rotary Electric Direct-drive Ship Propellers" , which successfully passed the scientific and technological achievement appraisal and obtained a certificate in September 2022; the project also won the First Prize of Science and Technology in the Guangdong Electrical Industry. In the same year, the company passed the re-evaluation of high-tech enterprise qualifications and was recognized as a specialized and innovative small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) and an innovative SME in Guangdong Province.
In 2022, Guangzhou HG set a record high for output value, with overseas orders contributing significantly to the company's revenue, far surpassing the contribution from domestic orders, becoming the company's primary source of output value profit growth. At the beginning of 2023, Guangzhou HG successfully delivered a batch of GRM260 rim driven thrusters to Jimei University and a batch of GRM40 rim driven thrusters to Fujian Zhangzhou Hailian Shipbuilding Co.Ltd. Currently, the company’s orders are relatively full, and it is expected that the 2023 revenue target may exceed 50 million to 100 million yuan, achieving strategic transformation and a leap in output value.

Qiu Xiangyao, director of Guangzhou HG, stated that Guangzhou HG has spent eight years meticulously developing the rim driven thruster, investing tens of millions of yuan in the research. They established a rim driven thruster research center in collaboration with a team of academicians from Wuhan University of Technology. Through extensive subsystem development and overall technological breakthroughs, as well as numerous prototype tests and actual ship trials, they have taken the lead in developing commercialized, highly reliable, and high-performance ship rim driven thrusters. Guangzhou HG has now mastered the key core technologies, and in the future, it will continue to make greater contributions to the shipbuilding industry and national defense construction with its focus on technology and product reliability.
